Session Type: Symposium
This symposium explores sanctuary as policy, place, and innovative practice in supporting im/migrant youth, who face significant educational challenges in U.S. public schools. The session examines how educators interpret and enact sanctuary policies to better support immigrant communities in a hostile political climate. The symposium highlights the efforts of various school actors and activists to create safer, more welcoming spaces for immigrant youth and their families. Presentations cover inclusive assessment practices, college readiness programs, pedagogical strategies, accompaniment, and abolitionist sanctuary practices. Collectively, these studies provide critical insights into sanctuary schools' role as innovative and inclusive environments, fostering belonging and success among recently arrived immigrant English learners.
