Division J Vice Presidential Session: College Students With Incarceration Histories: A Discussion on the Landscape of Data Infrastructure and Research

Fri, April 25, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3D

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Since 2015, there has been rapid growth in the numbers of colleges and universities providing postsecondary education during incarceration. This growth is a direct result of renewed access to federal student aid in the form of Pell Grants for otherwise eligible incarcerated people enrolled in postsecondary education. Presenters will share original data on incarcerated and formerly incarcerated college students, insights into institutional capacity for data collection and reporting on incarcerated students, and examples of research application in prison education. Grounded in qualitative analyses of open-ended surveys and interviews, our session first offers practical recommendations for college and university staff on the accurate and ethical collection and reporting of information on incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people.
