Session Type: Symposium
Since 2015, there has been rapid growth in the numbers of colleges and universities providing postsecondary education during incarceration. This growth is a direct result of renewed access to federal student aid in the form of Pell Grants for otherwise eligible incarcerated people enrolled in postsecondary education. Presenters will share original data on incarcerated and formerly incarcerated college students, insights into institutional capacity for data collection and reporting on incarcerated students, and examples of research application in prison education. Grounded in qualitative analyses of open-ended surveys and interviews, our session first offers practical recommendations for college and university staff on the accurate and ethical collection and reporting of information on incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people.
