Learning engineering is a research and data-informed approach to designing engaging, effective, and accessible learning environments, experiences, resources, and technologies. It has its roots in the variety of learning-related and human-centered design disciplines. Learning engineering is a systematic and iterative engineering approach to designing and engineering learning products that put learners at the center, engage learners over long periods of time, support learners’ doing, mental model building, and reflection, and meet learners and their teachers/ facilitators where they are as learners and people. We present learning engineering and its design process, introduce tools for managing research and data-informed iterative learning design, and showcase case studies that illustrate aspects of the LE process.
