A Bilingual Renaissance: Remedying and Repairing Monolingualism Through Critical Multilingual Education Research, Policy, and Practice

Wed, April 23, 4:20 to 5:50pm MDT (4:20 to 5:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 704

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Within this third decade of the new millennium, a Bilingual Renaissance has bloomed as policy shifts, growth in bilingual/dual language programs, the nation-wide adoption of the Seal of Biliteracy, and a greater critical consciousness of the social justice implications of access and equity in bilingual/dual language education. Within this climate favorable to renewal, repair and revitalization of multilingual education are also reasons for concern. The increasing gentrification of bilingual education, persistent marginalization of transnational students, and uneven bilingual licensure standards among others) threaten equity and sustainability s of the Renaissance. Employing a dynamic array of conceptual and methodological orientations, this symposium brings cutting-edge researchers together that maps out the promise, pitfalls, and global reach of the new multilingual era.
