This study provides school leaders with teachers’ firsthand accounts of their experiences of incivility in the workplace. Workplace incivility is the exchange of seemingly inconsequential, inconsiderate words and deeds that violate conventional norms of workplace conduct. Although leaders may shortsightedly dismiss incivility as unimportant, incivility impedes organizational progress. In addition to describing the sources of incivility, the study also captures participants’ recommendations for how school leaders can buffer teachers from incivility and strengthen civility on their campuses. This study comes at a pivotal time in public education in the U.S., as teacher turnover and teacher vacancies are higher than ever before. Moreover, including teachers’ voices in policy and leadership decisions is an essential—but often overlooked—aspect of educational reform.
