Alternatively Licensed Teachers’ Motivations to Continue Teaching

Wed, April 23, 10:50am to 12:20pm MDT (10:50am to 12:20pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Session Type: Poster Session

Abstract

This study is part of a larger mixed research study investigating alternatively licensed teachers' motivations to pursue and continue a teaching career. The current study addresses the research question: How do alternatively licensed teachers’ explanations of their commitment to continue teaching relate to their self-ratings of their commitment to continue teaching? Holistic profiles are developed to investigate the research question. Key findings include three distinct profiles of alternatively licensed teachers: high commitment (ratings of 90-100) with corresponding positive valuations, experiences, perceptions, and professional identity; some commitment (ratings of 61-89) with corresponding mixed valuations, experiences, perceptions, and professional identity; and low commitment (ratings of 0-60) negative valuations, experiences, and perceptions. Implications for recruiting, training, and retaining alternatively licensed teachers are discussed.
