Pursuing Equity in an Emerging Totalitarian State

Sat, April 26, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 110

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

In June 2023, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that race-based equity decisions in college admissions (“affirmative action”) violated the Constitution. Following this decision, some state legislatures took action to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts across their state education systems. Faculty and administrators who were at the forefront of these DEI efforts found themselves in fragile positions as some departments had their names and strategies changed while others were eliminated entirely.

In the current divisive political environment where efforts towards remedy and repair are being eroded, we ask how we conduct educational research in the professions that will continue to inform diversity, equity, and inclusion. This invited session will feature researchers who confront this duality daily.
