Abstract

This panel will grapple with the questions of how we can best pursue democratic citizenship education in a context where public political discourse is highly polarized. Our discussion will interrogate the purposes of dialogue across political difference and, strategies for helping students engage in perspective taking, identifying common ground, and productive engagement with controversial political topics, and the needs of students whose identities are targeted and threatened as part of polarized discourse
