Division A Fireside Chat: Navigating Book Bans and Anti-DEI Pressure in K-12 Schools: School Leaders' Responses and Research-Driven Resistance

Wed, April 23, 10:50am to 12:20pm MDT (10:50am to 12:20pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Mile High Ballroom 4CD

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

This fireside chat features both scholars and practitioners in a timely discussion about the increasing pressures K-12 school leaders face due to book bans and anti-DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) movements. As these challenges intensify, school leaders must navigate politically charged environments while striving to maintain inclusive and equitable school practices. This session will explore how school leaders resist these pressures, how research informs and is informed by their strategies, and how education research can support these efforts. We invite interested graduate students and other conference attendees engaged in this topic to attend, as this session aims to promote scholarship and practice that contribute to equity-informed school policy, climate, curricula, and leadership.
