Division B Fireside Chat: Envisioning Curriculum Toward Just Education Renewal: A Discussion About Culture, Gender, and Race

Wed, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm MDT (2:30 to 4:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Mile High Ballroom 4CD

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

Curriculum is an important part of education for inscribing cultural practices on students. In William Pinar's book "What is Curriculum Theory," the curriculum is a multifaceted process involving not only official policy, prescribed textbooks, and standardized examinations but also the “complicated conversation." Curriculum is created through the intermingling of different cultural, racial, and gendered backgrounds that are sometimes contested and reconstructed. This session aims to talk about what curriculum is under the complicated conjunctions of multiple identities and how to deal with the violence and exclusion at school. Three panels will talk about education with different narratives to envision curriculum towards just educational renewal. The fireside chat will provide critical insights to understand curriculum studies with complex social entanglements.
