Division J Fireside Chat: Academia Island: Perform or Perish

Abstract

This year’s Division J Fireside Chat is designed to offer insight into the complexities of navigating the academic world and develop strategies for success. Students will go through the challenges and complexities of pursuing a Ph.D through an interaction simulation, facing common obstacles along the way (e.g., advisor leaving the institution, courses being canceled, complications with funding, etc.). As they work in groups to achieve the ultimate goal of earning their Ph.D., we want to initiate a dialogue about the need for greater emphasis on building a community that values collective care where students can talk openly about their struggles and share best practices with their peers.
