Protecting Immigrant Students’ Right to Learn: A Spotlight on the Denver Metro Area

Fri, April 25, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Mile High Ballroom 1AB

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

Because of Denver’s reputation for being welcoming to newcomers, the Denver Metro Area has been targeted by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. There have been several raids that have greatly impacted immigrant children's right to learn in the Denver Metro Area. The session brings together researchers and practitioners to examine the history of education for immigrant and bilingual populations, the research on immigrant students’ right to learn, how immigrant students are currently being impacted by the current political environment, and how we can continue to support bilingual and immigrant students in the face of ongoing threats to our democracy.
