This study explores how adolescents engage with social media as sources of news, political information, and identity formation. Using think-aloud and interview data, we developed a conceptual map of adolescents' information-seeking behaviors. Findings revealed that while youth often view social media content as low quality, they still engage frequently. Participants showed some awareness of algorithmic influence and the importance of content verification but lacked consistent critical engagement. Many interacted passively with algorithmically curated content, though some practiced reciprocal manipulation by curating their feeds. These behaviors limited their understanding of complex issues. The study underscores the need for media literacy education that fosters critical thinking and lateral reading to support informed, responsible digital citizenship among young people.
