Abstract

Existing studies have explored portrayals of mathematicians in various mediums, such as movies, books, television shows, etc. However, little, if any, research has been conducted on how mathematicians are depicted in plays. This study utilizes convergent mixed methods content analysis to examine and compare character development (playwright methods) and representation (character traits) of female and male mathematicians in plays. Overall, the findings indicated that dispositional traits most commonly shape both female and male mathematician characters. However, playwrights more often employ motivational traits for male mathematician characters and physical traits for female mathematician characters. Furthermore, female mathematician characters are represented as socially, vocationally, and academically inferior to their male counterparts.
