Abstract

Asynchronous online discussions (AODs) are a widely adopted learner-centered activity in higher education. Self-regulated learning (SRL) skills are essential for college students to participate effectively in AODs. Drawing on data from 657 undergraduate and graduate students, this study found that students exhibited a moderate level of SRL skills in AODs. Among the three SRL phases, students performed better in the forethought phase, while the performance and self-reflection phases needed improvement. Doctoral students reported higher SRL levels than undergraduates. The study also identified commonly used SRL strategies in AODs and suggested opportunities for future support, including integrating artificial intelligence to support SRL in AODs. Findings offer insights for enhancing the quality of online learning through improved self-regulation in AODs.
