Self-regulated learning (SRL) is critical for effective participation in asynchronous online discussions (AODs). However, most existing SRL research focuses on general online learning contexts, with limited attention to specific learning activities like AODs. This study developed a 22-item survey instrument to measure students’ SRL in AODs across six subscales: goal setting, environment structuring, task strategies, time management, help-seeking, and self-evaluation. The instrument’s reliability and validity were supported by Cronbach’s alpha and confirmatory factor analysis. This work provides a foundation for future research on SRL in AODs and offers instructors a practical tool to assess students’ SRL skills, enabling more targeted and effective design and facilitation of online discussions.
