"NOT VERY AGE APPROPRIATE": A Mixed Methods Study about Early Childhood Administrator Views on LGBTQ Books

Fri, April 10, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Ground Floor, Gold 2

Abstract

Early childhood administrators impact the culture and pedagogy within their centers. Currently LGBTQ topics and identities are contested in educational settings and even more so within early childhood. This mixed methods study surveyed administrators of high-quality early childhood centers across North Carolina to understand their view of LGBTQ books and use in their centers. Sixty-five participants completed the survey. Findings indicated a lack of regular use of LGBTQ books in centers and almost half of administrators were “neutral”, “uncomfortable” or “very uncomfortable” with LGBTQ books in their center. There were negative and positive comments on the survey itself and LGBTQ books. Results indicate a need for education and training to focus on LGBTQ topics and how they are developmentally appropriate.
