Abstract

This qualitative content analysis explores how AI-enhanced simulations support pre-service teachers in developing family engagement competencies. Researchers examined conversation transcripts and reflective commentaries from 56 teacher candidates who interacted with AI-generated parent personas ranging from cooperative to combative. Four themes were identified: strategic adaptation across communication contexts, development of professional voice, reflective growth in communication skills, and persistent gaps in cultural awareness. Findings suggest AI-mediated practice can scaffold communication development and foster reflective insight. However, findings also highlight the need for deeper integration of equity-focused content. This study demonstrates the potential of AI tools in teacher preparation while underscoring the continued importance of culturally responsive, relationship-centered family engagement training.
