A Decade of Change: Tracking School Counselor Technology Use from 2013 to 2025

Fri, April 10, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 301A

Abstract

This study presents results from a national survey series examining school counselor technology use from 2013 to 2025. Conducted every four years with members of the American School Counselor Association, the surveys track changing patterns in digital communication, data use, and ethical practice. The 2025 instrument retains core items to support trend analysis and introduces new questions on artificial intelligence and in-school teletherapy, capturing how counselors are navigating emerging technologies. Findings reveal increasing reliance on digital tools and declining structural barriers, alongside ongoing concerns about role clarity and student privacy. By documenting adaptation over time and expanding to new domains, this research informs counselor preparation, ethical guidance, and policy development aimed at equitable student support in a digital age.
