School Counselors and AI: An Exploration of AI Tool Use in School Counseling

Abstract

Limited school counseling research suggests AI can enhance school counselor effectiveness by automating tasks and providing data-driven insights and resources. This study surveyed a random selection of American School Counselor Association members to explore school counselors’ attitudes, knowledge, and skills in using AI to design, implement, and evaluate comprehensive school counseling programs. Participants were asked to: share perceptions and familiarity around the use of AI and AI tools such as ChatGPT; identify how AI can improve or design comprehensive school counseling programs; and, propose various ways school counselors can use AI to advantage student opportunities. Preliminary results reveal that school counselors will identify ethical and appropriate applications ensuring the profession is engaged in this part of the educational landscape.
