Investigating the Impact of AI-Driven Differentiated Instruction in K-12 Science Classrooms

Sat, April 11, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

This presentation explores the emerging role of artificial intelligence (AI) in supporting differentiated instruction in K-12 science classrooms. Drawing on the only five empirical studies published since 2020, we examine how AI tools—such as adaptive learning platforms, game-based simulations, and inquiry-driven environments—enhance personalization, student engagement, and conceptual understanding. Findings show that AI-supported instruction fosters active learning and improves outcomes when paired with effective teacher training and scaffolded implementation. We also address key challenges including ethical concerns, access disparities, and the need for professional development. This session offers practical recommendations for educators and researchers seeking to integrate AI tools equitably and effectively in science education, with a focus on fostering inclusive, inquiry-based learning environments tailored to diverse student needs.
