Abstract

This research examines how online maker communities create supportive learning environments through collaborative problem-solving on platforms like Reddit's r/3Dprinting. Through ethnographic analysis of community interactions around technical challenges, this study reveals digital spaces functioning as laboratories of hope where failure becomes learning opportunity. Newcomers sharing imperfect first prints receive troubleshooting tips, encouragement, and validation rather than ridicule, creating inclusive environments for skill development. The practice transforms potential shame around technical failure into collective knowledge-building, with experienced makers mentoring novices through patient guidance and shared experimentation. Comment threads become mini-classrooms where knowledge exchanges freely and encouragement drives progress. Users share personal projects from practical gifts to whimsical creations, turning individual creativity into collaborative inspiration. This research contributes to understanding how digital communities can support informal STEM learning through cultures of care and mutual aid, revealing alternative models for technical education that prioritize community support over competitive achievement and demonstrating maker platforms' potential for fostering resilience through collaborative innovation.
