Theorizing self, other, and community: Weaving Korean Epistemologies with Pulzip [Grass Straw] Art

Sat, April 11, 11:45am to 1:15pm PDT (11:45am to 1:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 303B

Abstract

This presentation explores the interdependent relationships of self, other, and community by weaving Korean epistemologies with Pulzip (grass straw) art. Drawing from Donghak, Taoism, and Korean Buddhism alongside posthumanist theory, the study challenges binary views of self/other and Eurocentric educational paradigms. Employing philosophical essay and arts-based inquiry, including visual analysis of Pulzip artworks, the presenters use the metaphor and material of weaving to investigate shifting subjectivities, entanglement, and relational becoming. Ramie threads—varied, resilient, and unpredictable—serve as powerful metaphors of interconnectedness. This work aligns with AERA’s 2026 theme by advancing non-Western frameworks and indigenous knowledge as critical interventions in education, equity, and curriculum studies.
