Cultivating Loving-Kindness in Future Educational Leaders: A Qualitative Study of Practicing Meditation with Doctorate of Education Students

Wed, April 8, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Gold Level, Gold 3

Abstract

Doctoral students experience higher rates of stress and anxiety than undergraduates, yet these future transformational leaders need mental strength, compassion, and emotional balance. The purpose of this study was to describe perceptions and experiences of students practicing loving-kindness meditation (LKM) during synchronous online Doctor of Education classes at a large university. Qualitative research was used to examine the experiences of 25 Ed.D. students practicing meditation at the start of classes. Most participants perceived LKM as a difficult practice, struggling with mind-wandering and engaged when rushed or overwhelmed. A smaller number reported stress relief and shifted perspective towards others.
