Abstract

This study delineated the trajectory of teachers’ work engagement during and after the COVID-19 pandemic (FY2020–2024) and examined the alterations in the determinants of work engagement throughout this period. The survey was conducted in X Prefecture, Japan, between November 2020 and November 2024. The analysis included 6,965 teaching staff from prefectural schools who participated in all five surveys (1,393 teachers× five times). The results indicated that teachers’ work engagement declined during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, and a significant declining trend in work engagement owing to principal trust after the COVID-19 pandemic was observed. Therefore, principals may be unable to cope with the increased workload since the COVID-19 outbreak.
