Understanding learner psychology is essential for effective language education. While language mindset is often conceptualized along a fixed–growth continuum, this oversimplifies the complex, sometimes contradictory beliefs learners hold. Using latent profile analysis (LPA), this study identified six distinct mindset configurations among 817 Chinese university EFL students. These profiles revealed nuanced blends of fixed and growth beliefs, challenging the binary mindset model. Findings highlight the psychological diversity of learners and offer pedagogical implications for differentiated data-informed language instruction. The study contributes conceptually, methodologically, and practically to a more humanizing and future-oriented vision of language learning.
