Stories of Trauma Among Teachers in Urban Classrooms

Abstract

Teachers who engage in trauma-informed care and who directly work with children who have experienced traumatic events might experience secondary trauma. This presentation will highlight the findings of a narrative inquiry into the experiences of teachers in urban classrooms who engage with students who have had traumatic experiences. Experiential narratives of the primary trauma of students that teachers encounter and the related secondary trauma of teachers will be discussed as a themed finding within a larger study into the experiences of teachers with serving students who have experienced trauma in urban schools.
