Displaced Imagination: Palestinian Children’s Visions for Their Desired Educational Futures

Abstract

This study explores the educational future visions of fourth generations Palestinian refugee children attending UNRWA schools. This study is part of a broader project that aims to theorize what a pedagogy of care rooted in mujaawarah(Fasheh, 2015). Guided by a theorized pedagogy of care, a curriculum centered on cultural heritage was designed and implemented in a summer program at a refugee camp in Lebanon. Children's writing and interview responses focused on envisioning their educational futures were thematically analyzed. Findings showed children were dissatisfied with UNRWA schooling but hopeful of better educational futures. They envisioned transformative social educational futures where relatinalities with the human and more-than-human world (e.g., relations of dignity and belonging) are recognized, valued and designed for.
