Exploring, Engaging, Empowering: A Mixed-Methods Study Informing a Family and Community-Based Early Literacy Plan

Sat, April 11, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Gold Level, Gold 3

Abstract

This presentation highlights results from a mixed-methods study exploring teachers’ perceptions of family/community engagement in early literacy education. The first phase of this study included creation and distribution of a Literacy Needs Assessment, designed to focus on early literacy, including family and community engagement. Results revealed two key findings: (1) districts largely rely on a school-centric model of engagement rather than a community-centric one, and (2) there is a disconnect between the values schools promote and the practices they implement. These insights informed the development of a transformative, community-based plan for early literacy, with actionable recommendations to shift from a school-driven model toward a collaborative approach—one that recognizes families/communities as partners in fostering early literacy development.
