Abstract

Refugee families often face challenges navigating the U.S. education system and accessing pathways to STEM careers. This project, a partnership between a public university and ethnic community-based organizations representing Burundian, Congolese, and Syrian communities, supported refugee parents and their children (grades 7–12) through workshops designed to build STEM aspirations and college knowledge. While schools were not directly involved, the university–community collaboration enhanced families’ STEM capital and college social capital. Students reported increased interest in fulfilling STEM careers. Findings underscore the potential of culturally grounded, community-university partnerships to expand educational access and promote equity—especially for families traditionally underserved by school systems.
