Unforgetting Marginalization, Imagining Just Futures: Rural Technology and Leadership

Sat, April 11, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Abstract

Rural schools have historically marginalized multilingual and multicultural students, especially those from Latinx communities, resulting in persistent inequities (Santiago et al., 2025). This study examines how rural principals in Colorado use culturally responsive leadership (Khalifa et al., 2016) and technology leadership (Dexter et al., 2016) to address these challenges. Technology is framed not only as an instructional tool but as a transformative resource for expanding access and fostering inclusion. Data will be collected through semi-structured interviews with principals, teacher focus groups, and staff surveys. The goal is to illuminate how rural school leaders leverage technology and culturally responsive practices to disrupt historical patterns of exclusion and promote educational equity.
