Zine-making as Slow Scholarship: A Critical Qualitative Intervention

Wed, April 8, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Gold Level, Gold 3

Abstract

Zines, self-published works that combine collage, art, and nontraditional writing, can be a critical qualitative intervention against the neoliberal academy. In this paper I highlight the ways in which zine-making allows researchers to move beyond the qualitative-quanitative binary and into deeper levels of methodological engagement and theoretical articulation. I provide practical examples of how zines can be used to collect and display qualitative data, and explore how the process of zine-making as slow scholarship can be a form of resistance to the strictures of higher education.
