Abstract

The global surge in the use of generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) tools has impacted PK-12 teaching and learning. In response to the need for evidence-based insights, this systematic review used a mixed-methods approach to analyze empirical studies published after the release of ChatGPT-3.5 in November 2022. Data were synthesized on (a) research methods, (b) types and uses of Gen AI tools, and (c) reported benefits and limitations. The predominantly qualitative and mixed-methods studies indicated that teachers and students used Gen AI assistants, chatbots, generators, and platforms to support the development of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Findings highlighted the need to prepare current and future teachers to guide students in addressing ethical concerns and the limitations of generated content.
