Teacher Educator Identity: An Elusive Construct

Sat, April 11, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: 4th Floor, Diamond 9

Abstract

Drawing from research literature reporting on teacher education in the last 25 years, this manuscript unpacks the notion of professional identity specific to teacher educators. This is important because teacher educators represent a distinct professional group (Gardner & Shulman, 2005; Swennen et al., 2010), with expertise and competencies that are different from two of their most closely related professional groups: teachers (Bullough, 2005; Smith, 2005), and other instructors in higher education settings (Loughran, 2006; Lunenberg et al., 2007). This manuscript pays specific attention to understanding the intersection of personal and professional identity, as well as to the relationship between teacher educator identity and professional practice.
