Bridging Theory and Practice: A University-Led Sustainability Hub Empowering Youth Through Experiential Environmental Education

Sun, April 12, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

The Solid Waste Sustainability Hub, launched at a Southern U.S. university, addresses critical gaps in environmental education by promoting recycling and sustainability among high school and college students. This collaborative initiative uses experiential learning and pre- and post-surveys to assess knowledge gains and shifts in student attitudes. Results show increased awareness, enthusiasm, and interest in sustainability-focused academic and career pathways. The Hub bridges theoretical knowledge with real-world application, encouraging responsible behaviour and environmental stewardship. As a model for integrating sustainability into informal education, it empowers educators to prepare future generations to meet growing solid waste challenges through innovative, hands-on learning experiences.
