Pre-Service Teachers’ Experiences and Perspectives on Using Generative AI in Developing Teaching Materials

Fri, April 10, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to investigate pre-service teachers’ experiences with using generative AI (GenAI) tools to develop teaching materials over eight weeks. Nineteen pre-service teachers at a midwestern U.S. university individually designed children’s picture books and collaboratively created lessons using GenAI tools such as ChatGPT, Canva, and Suno. An online survey, reflection papers, and focus group interviews were used to understand pre-service teachers’ experiences with GenAI. Results showed that GenAI supported creativity, personalization, and efficiency, while raising concerns about ethical use, over-reliance, and the need for critical thinking. This study implies the importance of integrating AI literacy and ethical reflection into teacher preparation programs to equip educators for the evolving educational landscape.
