Abstract

This study analyzes 10 children’s picturebooks portraying gun violence through a trauma-informed lens. As firearm-related incidents increasingly affect schools and communities, these books can help young readers process fear, grief, and resilience appropriately. Using critical qualitative content analysis, the study examines how gun-related incidents are introduced, experienced, and resolved in text and illustration, with attention to emotional responses and support systems. Findings highlight varied sources of exposure, young protagonists’ coping strategies, and the role of family, peers, and community for healing. The study also identifies racialized discourses and the issues of social justice and equity. This study offers insights into how literature can not only reflect children’s realities but also equip them with strategies for healing, advocacy, and critical awareness.
