This paper (1) describes how one joint instructor-class research project was incorporated into a two-course sequence consisting of training in statistical analysis and research design and (2) highlights various student perspectives and that of the instructor as to how this component both benefited and challenged the teaching and learning of research methods. We aim to prompt audience members’ reflection on how and why they have been teaching research methods (including applied statistics) as they do, while imagining how it might be done in the future by illuminating perspectives that may inspire instructors to try new methods that help graduate student research methods learners thrive.
