Abstract

Objective: Identify the educational carcerality subgroups of high school boys who aspire to attend college.
Methods: Using data from 1,520 high school boys in the Future of Families & Child Wellbeing Study, we conducted a latent class analysis to explore educational carcerality subgroups and their experiences with college aspirations, college-going behaviors, school discipline, and school policing. Covariates included demographics and school connectedness.
Results: Three subgroups were identified: (1) “police stationed on campus”; (2) “police stationed and vicarious school policing”; and (3) “school disciplined/police stationed and vicarious school policing.”
Conclusion: Educators, parents, and policymakers should understand the multidimensional aspects that school discipline and school policing assist in comprising the college aspirations and college-going profiles among high school boys.
