Abstract

Objective: To understand school discipline, school policing, college aspirations, and college-going behaviors among high schoolers.

Methods: Data (N = 4,898 high school students) from the Future of Families & Child Wellbeing Study were employed to conduct a latent class analysis to explore subgroups of college aspirations, college-going behaviors, school discipline, and school policing. Covariates included demographics and school connectedness.

Results: Three subgroups of students were identified: (1) “high educational carcerality”; (2) “moderate educational carcerality”; and (3) “low educational carcerality."

Conclusion: Educators, parents, and policymakers should understand that school discipline and school policing assist in comprising the college aspirations and college-going profiles among students.
