Abstract

Communication and collaboration with families are central components to home-school engagement. This case study focused on one elementary school and examined the families’ perspectives on home-school communication and school issued literacy learning in the home (e.g., homework, reading expectations). Data sources included surveys and semi-structured interviews. Results indicated families wanted streamlined digital communication (e.g., text, app, email) as too much was overwhelming. To support learning at home, families wanted books that met their child’s reading proficiency. They did not want to spend a lot of time on assignments and needed easy-to-follow instructions to complete tasks. Individualization was also desired as families wanted to support skills their children needed to develop, not work that was perceived as too easy.
