Reparative and Anti-Eugenic Futures: A University Case Study

Fri, April 10, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 511AB

Abstract

The past practices of eugenics and its current legacies and entanglements continue to inform the representation of disabled people of color in higher education. This cross-departmental, interdisciplinary research project examined how eugenic injustices continued to inform the educational participation of disabled people of color at a Hispanic Serving Institution in the northeast United States. The project confronted the racial, political, and educational roots of exclusion faced by disabled BIPOC by linking the legacy of eugenics to systems of incarceration, education, and disenfranchisement and charted a path toward reparative justice and institutional accountability.
