Not a job in limbo: Understanding the relationship between assistant principal turnover, teacher turnover, and student attendance

Fri, April 10, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Abstract

Assistant principals (APs) are important education personnel, but research on AP turnover and its impact on school outcomes has remained scarce. Using eight years of Florida State administrative data and Common Core of Data from 2003-2011, we find that assistant principal turnover is associated with significant increases in teacher turnover. Our findings examined the effects of assistant principal turnover, which varied by the types of AP turnover events (Moves, Leaves, and Promotions). We also discussed the implications of these findings, not only for research and practices but also for district leaders and policymakers across the U.S.
