This research seeks to understand how STEM professionals established their pathway towards a career in the water industry. Eligible professionals were recruited through a survey sent to water industry professional organizations within California. Online surveys sent to local water-related professional organizations provided a broad understanding of critical factors; eleven of these respondents were selected and interviewed to provide further insights into the experiences that influenced their career decision and pathway. Findings highlight how environmental interests and personal experiences shape career choice, with professionals finding attainment, intrinsic, and utility values in their work in the water industry, as well as potential barriers or costs, including educational requirements, a complex hiring process and a lack of awareness about water industry careers.
