Same-Generation Kinship Networks: A Familial Persistence Tool

Fri, April 10, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Gold Level, Gold 1

Abstract

This phenomenological study examines the relationships between students of color who attend university simultaneously or close together with same-generation relatives (e.g., siblings or cousins). Extant positive findings reveal this unique kinship provides students with social, familial, and navigational capital in relation to college entrance and persistence. These same-generation kinship networks contribute to persistence, affinity, and sense of belonging for same-generation relatives attending university simultaneously.
