Safe in College, Uncertain in Classrooms: An LGBTQIA+ Community Participatory Action Research Study

Thu, April 9, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Abstract

This community participatory action research study examined LGBTQIA+ student experiences in a College of Education at a large, urban public state university. Using mixed methods (surveys, written responses, focus groups), the study explored college climate, academic support, and institutional practices affecting LGBTQIA+ students pursuing education careers. Themes demonstrated: (1) Microaggressions and power imbalances; (2) Tension between safe college spaces and uncertain PK-12 classrooms; and (3) Overall positive college culture. While students felt safe being 'out' within the college, security decreased in PK-12 classrooms, including student teaching placements. Students expressed concerns about supporting LGBTQIA+ PK-12 students and navigating homo-/transphobic situations. This research illustrates the need for critical self-reflection in schools/colleges of education to combat cisheteronormativity and prepare LGBTQIA+ educators.
