While much research addresses job satisfaction and retention of special education teachers and teachers of color, few studies focus on special education teachers of color specifically. This qualitative study aims to uncover the sources of job satisfaction and reasons cited for staying in the field by special educators of color. Four special educators who are currently teaching and are people of color were interviewed. Results reveal that participants’ job satisfaction and intention to stay were influenced by supportive administrators, positive relationships with colleagues, and meaningful connections with their students. They also emphasized being part of a supportive community, particularly one that reflects their cultural and ethnic backgrounds. To improve retention, stakeholders should prioritize cultivating an inclusive and supportive work environment.
