Abstract

The rapid development of GenAI has prompted many higher education instructors to engage in self-initiated use of GenAI for instructional design. Teachers’ emotional experiences in this informal interaction are essential because they directly impact their continuous use of advanced technologies for teaching innovation. Few studies have examined teachers’ emotional experiences in these engagements and how emotions influence creativity. Grounded in the Control-Value Theory of Achievement Emotions and Componential Model of Creativity, based on interviews with twelve teacher educators, key findings indicate that while positive emotions enhance creative acts and insights, negative emotions can also prompt creative insights. The study illustrates the nuanced mechanism between emotions and creativity and suggests implications for teacher development in self-initiated engagement with GenAI.
