Abstract

Effective leadership is placing greater emphasis on mutual understanding and shared responsibility. Although the concept of distributed leadership has been extensively adopted in educational research, it is often used interchangeably with shared leadership. Still, research on links and differences between these two concepts is limited. This qualitative review critically examines the conceptual and empirical distinctions between shared leadership and distributed leadership in K-12 education. Drawing on empirical studies published between 2010 and 2024, a total of 40 articles were selected through a systematic search using Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases. It aims to identify overlaps and tensions between the two concepts, arguing for clearer differentiation in theoretical development and practical application for future shared leadership studies.
