Abstract

This study addresses limitations of traditional medical English instruction by designing, implementing, and evaluating a gamified storytelling web application through a hybrid, evidence-based process. Using the Double Diamond design model integrated with Boller & Kapp’s gamification framework, user needs and motivational drivers shaped all design and content decisions. Through qualitative interviews and a scoping review, the app was tailored to learners' specific challenges. Usability was iteratively refined via expert feedback. In a quasi-experimental trial with medical students, the intervention significantly improved language competency, motivation, and engagement compared to traditional methods. Psychometric and user analyses confirmed high app quality and strong motivational impact. This research offers a scalable design framework supporting innovation, equity, and effectiveness in educational technology.
